The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel for the University of Florida is embarking on a nation-wide search to fill the position of Senior University Counsel for Intellectual Property and Research.

Dedicated to excellence in education, research and service, the University of Florida is the 3rd largest public university in the nation and is a member of the Association of American Universities. UF has an annual research volume of over $580M, issues approximately 70 technology licenses each year, and is among the country's leading research universities in technology transfer.

The University has a student enrollment of over 50,000, employs approximately 20,000 faculty and staff members, includes two health science/medical centers, and has one of the nation's top NCAA Division 1 athletic programs (with football and back-to-back men's basketball national championships) and valuable trademarks.

Reporting to the Vice President and General Counsel, with a reporting relationship to the Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, the Senior University Counsel for IP and Research is a member of the Vice President and General Counsel's senior leadership team. This lawyer will provide excellent legal services for technology licensing transactions and other intellectual property interests, complex material transfer agreements, and research agreements involving significant intellectual property or heightened risk to the University. This lawyer will serve and work closely with the leadership and staff of UF's Office of Technology Licensing, as well as with the Division of Sponsored Research and other university clients.

Salary: Negotiable, commensurate with qualifications, may exceed range.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a J.D. or L.L.B. from an ABA-accredited law school. At least 8 to 10 years of law practice (or equivalent experience), with specialized training and sophisticated experience in intellectual property law and licensing are required. A strong client-service, problem-solving, client-enabling and deal-making orientation and exceptional legal, analytical, inter-personal, and oral and written communication skills are required. High integrity and a strong work ethic are required. The ability to effectively serve an entrepreneurial client and to work in a collaborative, teamwork-oriented, fast-paced environment are critical. The successful candidate must be licensed to practice law in the State of Florida or be licensed in a state within the U.S. and become licensed in Florida within 12 months of employment.

Competitive Qualifications: Specialized training in a sophisticated technology-oriented law firm or in-house law department is beneficial, as is experience representing research universities or other tax-exempt entities. Appreciation of the academic research and technology licensing culture are beneficial. Knowledge of federal research regulations, including export controls and OFAC licensing is also beneficial.
